Saalfelden is the largest centrally located town in the district, and the third largest municipality (based on residents) in the state after Salzburg and Hallein.

Central shopping town for the district and the neighbouring Tyrol with a total sales area of over 41,000 m², annual sales of more than €153 million and a catchment area of approx. 85,000 consumers.
